A Baby's Transition

This is just a guide on how to introduce solid foods to your little angel.

A mother can start introducing solid foods when her baby is already ready to take in solids.

How will I know when my baby is ready?

Your baby will give you clear signs when he's ready to move beyond liquid-only nourishment. Cues to look for include:

  • Head control. Your baby needs to be able to keep his head in a steady, upright position
  • Losing the "extrusion reflex." To keep solid food in his mouth and then swallow it, your baby needs to stop using his tongue to push food out of his mouth.
  • Sitting well when supported. Even if he's not quite ready for a highchair, your baby needs to be able to sit upright to swallow well. For the majority, it is usually around 4-6 months of age when giving semi-solid food is started (if your baby is ready by then).

If your baby is still breast feeding, continue giving that and alternate it with solids. GRADUALLY.

What do I feed my baby?

Breastmilk + Semi-liquid iron-fortified rice cereal
Then you can try other grain cereals
How do I feed my baby?
Begin feeding semi solids by giving your baby a small amount at first, to see how he/she will take it.
Mix about 1 teaspoon cereals with about 5 teaspoon breastmilk or formula (the current one she's used to). This mixture is similar to soup in consistency - that way, your baby will not have difficulty in adjusting to the change.
Try this for a few days until your baby gets used to it.
Once adjusted, you can now adjust the solid-liquid ratio (i.e. from 1 tsp cereal, adjust the amount to 5 teaspoon or more of the cereal with milk until the consistency changes or becomes thicker depending on how your baby can tolerate

If your baby won't eat the mixture stated above, don't give up. Try to give it another try after a few days.

When feeding your baby, talk to him/her in a calm and encouraging manner as you offer each spoonful.
Have a lot of patience. Feed your baby at his/her own pace. Do not rush nor slow the pace. Let your baby adjust.
Let your baby explore the food with his/her touch, sight, smell, and taste. That's the best way to get your baby comfortable with something new.

Just how much will I feed my baby?
gradually introduce semi solid foods once or twice a day - depending on the tolerance of your baby.
Once your baby has adjusted, you can now give semi solids 3 time per day and in between, you can also give him/her breastmilk.

Are there any other alternatives to cereals?

Even though it's a good idea to get your baby accustomed to eating a wide variety of foods, it'll take time for him to get used to each new taste and texture. Each baby will have unique food preferences, but the transition should go something like this:

1. Semi-liquid cereals
2. Strained or mashed fruits and vegetables
3. Finely chopped table foods, including meat and other protein sources

As I have mentioned earlier, introduce semi solids GRADUALLY. That way, if your baby develops an allergic reaction, you will not which ones to avoid in the future.

Speaking of which...

Avoid these foods for your baby:

Honey and corn syrup- These may contain bacterial spores that can cause food-borne illnesses to your baby which can most often be fatal.

Salted and overly sweet foods- A baby's immature kidneys cannot handle too much salt. as for excessive sweets, it may displace the essential nutrients needed by your baby.
