understand and deal with your child's changing body and mind, with some useful information on your kids growth and development.

Growth: the natural increase in body size as well as sizes of different organs. This is achieved by cell multiplication and by increase in the intracellular substances

Development: maturation of organs and systems, gaining of skills and ability of adaptation & assuming responsibilities

Stages of Growth & Development:

a. Embryonic stage
1st 12 weeks of pregnancy during which the fertilized ovum differentiates into an organism

b. Fetal stage
12-40 weeks of pregnancy characterized by rapid growth & development

c. Perinatal stage
Start of labor to end of 1st 24 hours after birth

d. Postnatal stage

1. Neonatal period:
1st month of life
most critical period
main problems are prematurity, birth injuries, cong anomalies & infection

2. Infancy:
1-12 months
main problems are infection & nutritional dis.

3. Preschool child (toddler)
1-4 years
accidents, nutrition & infection problems

4.
Newborn Care - You can never be prepared once your bundle of joy is born, especially for first time mommies. Being a mom for the first time is not that easy but nonetheless it requires dedication because a baby's needs are urgent, continuous & often unclear. Both you & your baby will have to adjust, just give yourself some time. Get to know your baby.

Now that you & your baby are home, the next question that will come to mind is "how do/will I take care of a newborn?" Below are some of the questions most mothers have asked me:

Is it ok to bathe my baby even if he's only a few days old?

Yes, it is a must to bathe a baby everyday provided that the water for bathing should be warm so that your baby will not get chills. Make sure to get a bed-like shift to place your baby into while bathing so that there will be no slips or accidents occurring during bath time. As for soaps & shampoo, use something that is mild and hypoallergenic for baby's skin. If you notice any change in your baby's skin (i.e. Redness, rashes, lesions, etc.), stop using the current soap and consult your pediatrician.

After bathing, clean your baby's umbilical stump (if it still hasn't come off) using cotton with alcohol. Make sure to clean it three times a day. If the stump has fallen off already, clean the insides as well by using a cotton bud w/ antiseptic to prevent infection from taking place.

How much milk am I suppose to give my baby?

A growing baby needs all the nutrients you can give. During his first few days of life, a baby can tolerate 1oz of milk every 2-3 hours (approx. 8-9 times/day).

Milk Formula vs Breast Milk

As much as possible, it is much better to give your baby breastmilk. Breastmilk is already good enough to meet a baby's growing needs and your baby gets an added bonus of immunoglobulin to help your baby fight off sickness. Unless, your baby has problems in digesting milk (lactose intolerance, milk allergy, etc) then it is best to use a milk formula suited for your baby's needs.

As your baby grows each day, the amount of food he takes in also increases. So, if your baby still cries after giving him his usual amount of milk, then its time to increase the volume of milk in small increments of the usual amount you give.

During feeding, it is a must to carry your baby and position him at approximately 45 degree angle to prevent your baby from aspirating milk into his lungs.

After every feeding, make sure you burp your baby. This can be from a few minutes to about an hour. A baby thats not being burped properly can be irritated. This may be due to having a gassy abdomen or Filipino counterpart is "kabag".

Another important aspect of caring for your baby is by giving him his vaccinations to help his immune system fight off preventable diseases. Your pediatrician will advise you when he should receive his vaccines.

Frequent follow-up with your paediatrician is important so that you will also be aware about his growth and developmental status

Super Foods for Men & Women

Just two to three oysters deliver a full day's supply of zinc, a mineral critical for normal functioning of the male reproductive system.

By Maureen Callahan

FOODS FOR MEN

1. Tomato Sauce. Men who eat a lot of tomatoes, tomato sauce, or pizza smothered with the stuff may be giving themselves a hedge against prostate cancer. So say researchers at Harvard, who studied the eating habits of more than 47,000 male health professionals. They found that men who ate tomato sauce two to four times per week had a 35 percent lower risk of developing prostate cancer than men who ate none. A carotenoid called lycopene, which tomatoes contain in abundance, appeared to be responsible. But scientists were puzzled: tomato juice didn't seem to have a protective effect. Other research showed why. For best absorption, lycopene should be cooked with some kind of fat. So pizza may be just what the doctor ordered.

2. Oysters. Myth has it that oysters are the food of love. Science may agree. Just two to three oysters deliver a full day's supply of zinc, a mineral critical for normal functioning of the male reproductive system. Scientists are divided over reports that sperm counts have declined over the last 50 years and that environmental factors are to blame. Nutritional deficiencies do seem to be the cause of certain cases of low testosterone. Getting adequate zinc is sometimes the answer (11 mg per day is recommended for men; more than 40 mg can pose risks). In one trial, 22 men with low testosterone levels and sperm counts were given zinc every day for 45 to 50 days. Testosterone levels and sperm counts rose.

3. Broccoli. A recent Harvard study finds that cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, may protect against bladder cancer. It's one of the most common cancers in this country, and affects two to three times as many men as women. Scientists analyzed the diets of nearly 50,000 men and discovered that those who ate five servings or more per week of cruciferous veggies were half as likely to develop bladder cancer over a ten-year period as men who rarely ate them. And broccoli and cabbage were singled out as the most protective foods.

4. Peanut Butter. If you want a healthy heart, spread your morning toast with peanut butter. Heart disease is the leading killer of men and women, but men fall victim at an earlier age. Researchers from Pennsylvania State University compared the cholesterol-lowering effect of the American Heart Association's Step II Diet with a higher-fat diet based on peanuts. The AHA plan included more carbohydrates. The peanut regimen was 36 percent fat. After 24 days both diets lowered "bad" LDL cholesterol. But the peanut plan also caused a drop in blood fats called triglycerides and did not decrease HDL, the "good" cholesterol. The AHA diet raised levels of triglycerides and lowered levels of HDL.

"Peanut butter is a little higher in fat," says Penny Kris-Etherton, Ph.D., the lead author of the Penn State study. "But it's the type that's good for you -- monounsaturated fat." Researchers have predicted that the peanut diet could reduce heart-disease risk even more than could the AHA diet. Just don't go nutty plastering on the tasty spread, since it is high in calories.

5. Watermelon. Until the age of 55, more men suffer from high blood pressure than do women. Research suggests that foods rich in potassium can reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. The evidence is so convincing that the Food and Drug Administration recently allowed food labels to bear a health claim about the connection between potassium-rich foods and blood pressure. "There isn't a dietary requirement for potassium," says Kathleen Cappellano, nutrition-information manager at Tufts University in Boston. "But a good goal is about 2000 milligrams or more a day." Watermelon, a rich source of this mineral, has more potassium -- 664 mg -- in one large slice than the amount found in a banana or a cup of orange juice. So cut yourself another slice and enjoy the taste of summer.

FOR THE WOMEN

1. Papaya. This tropical fruit packs about twice the vitamin C of an orange. Add it to your arsenal against gallbladder disease, which afflicts twice as many women as men.

After analyzing the blood of over 13,000 people, scientists from the University of California, San Francisco, found that women who had lower levels of vitamin C were more likely to have gallbladder illnesses. One medium papaya (about ten ounces), with its 188 mg of vitamin C and a mere 119 calories, is a refreshing source of the vitamin. The once exotic fruit now can be found in most supermarkets.

2. Flaxseed. Bakers use this nutty-flavored seed mainly to add flavor and fiber. But scientists see the tiny reddish-brown seed, rich in estrogenlike compounds called lignans, as a potential weapon against breast cancer. An exciting report at last year's San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium showed that adding flaxseed to the diet of women with breast cancer effectively slowed tumor growth. You can flavor your muffins with flaxseed, but the easiest way to get the beneficial lignans is to sprinkle a few tablespoons of ground flaxseed on your morning cereal. Look for the seeds in health food stores or in supermarkets on the flour aisle. They're easy to grind in a blender or coffee grinder. But get seeds -- there are no lignans in the oil.

3. Tofu. Foods high in soy protein can lower cholesterol and may minimize menopausal hot flashes and strengthen bone. Isoflavones, plant chemicals in soybeans that have a structure similar to estrogen, may be the reason. Though animal studies form the bulk of the evidence, a human study found that 90 mg of isoflavones was beneficial to bone (specifically the spine). And two other studies suggest that 50 to 76 mg of isoflavones a day may offer some relief from hot flashes. A half-cup of tofu contains about 25 to 35 mg of isoflavones.

4. Buffalo Meat. Due largely to menstruation, women tend to be anemic more than men. And low iron levels in blood can cause severe fatigue. To get a good dose of iron, try bison. Bison, or buffalo, meat is lean and has what diet-conscious women want -- lots of iron and less fat than most cuts of beef. "The iron content is about 3 milligrams in a 3 1/2-ounce uncooked portion," says Marty Marchello, Ph.D., at North Dakota State University. "That portion contains less than 3 grams of fat." Buffalo meat can help boost energy and lower weight. And you don't have to have a home on the range to get some bison anymore. You can pick it up at many supermarkets across the United States, or through mail order or on the Internet.

5. Collard Greens. This humble vegetable may help fight osteoporosis, which afflicts many women late in life. In addition to getting adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D, some studies suggest that vitamin K may have a bone-protective effect as well. Based on data from one of the largest studies of women, the Nurses' Health Study, researchers discovered that women who ate enough vitamin K-rich foods (at least 109 micrograms of the vitamin daily) were 30 percent less likely to suffer a hip fracture during ten years of follow-up than women who ate less. Researchers point out that dark-green leafy vegetables -- Brussels sprouts, spinach, broccoli -- are all good sources of the vitamin. But collard greens, with about 375 micrograms per half-cup, are among the best.

There you have it: five great foods for women and for men that can keep both of you well fed and healthy too.

Site Source:
http://www.rd.com/living-healthy/super-foods-for-men-and-women/article14700.html

Congested Nose

Allergic Rhinitis is allergic reaction to dust, pollen, etc. Symptoms involve frequent sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, nose and ears..

I've been suffering from this for years. Hirap! Di makaamoy, laging may sipon. Namumula mata at ilong all the time. Ang hirap mabuhay ng normal. (It is hard for me! I can't use my sense of smell, always have runny and congested nose, teary eyes all the time. It's hard to lead a normal life.)

I tried taking antihistamine like benadryl, kaso, lagi ako groggy (but, i am always groggy with benadryl). Can't function well.

Help!!!!!!

Answer:

The best solution is still to consult your physician so that you can be evaluated properly.

If it is a case of allergic rhinitis, i am sorry to tell you that antihistamines, leukotriene inhibitors, decongestants and/or even corticosteroids (for severe forms only) are the types of medications used. There is still no breakthrough in eradicating this disease (if i may call it that) permanently. Thank God meron nang naimbentong mga vaccines for different diseases, yes including cervical cancer. ^_^

What i usually tell my patients with this condition is to take their prescribed medications whenever they have an attack. I personally do not prescribe my patients with a nasal spray containing any form of decongestant because of the chance of having rhinitis medicamentosa or rebound rhinitis once a patient stops using these types of spray - possible na pwedeng bumalik at kung bumalik man, ito ay mas malala.

What do I tell my patients:

*For clearing stuffy nose, i tell them to take an oral decongestant in the form of :
Generic Name: Phenylpropanolamine HCl, Paracetamol, Chlorpheniramine Maleate
Brand/Trade names: Decolgen, Bioflu, Nafarin A among others (kayo na ang bahala kung saan kyo mas makakamura)

Plus

Drink a LOT of fluids like water or juice (definitely NOT any form of alcoholic beverages nor sodas or colas).

*To relieve the sniffles, redness, tears and/or itchinesscan be in the form of the following:
a. antihistamines: (any of these are effective antihistamines, the difference lang is the cost)
generic name: Loratadine 10mg (Brand: Claritin, Allerta, etc)
generic name: Desloratadine 5mg (Brand: Aerius)
generic name: Fexofenadine 120mg (Brand: telfast)

**These antihistamines does not cause so much drowsiness like Benadryl or Iterax. So for people who are
driving and those who needs a lot of consentration at work, the above meds are recommended.

b. Leukotriene inhibitor:
generic name: Monteleukast (there are currently 3 brand names available that i know of but their
price is not that cheap). Nevertheless, this drug is also a potent one and the mechanism of action is different from that of an antihistamine.

If you want to feel immediate relief, atihistamine is the preferred meds. Leukotrienes tend to act somewhat more
slower but it is longer lasting though.

Speaking of Nasal spray, the only spray i can recommend is the generic: Sodium Chloride nasal drops. At least this is a physiologic meds (i.e. our body fluids also contains salt).

Lice

Pwede po ang magtanong?...
Ano po a yung mga pangpatanggal ng kuto? I need help because i knew a lot people with this condition...)

Answer:
For Lice and its eggs - Generic Name: Lindane
Brand Name: Kwell

I suggest you buy the shampoo preparation of kwell. While your cousin is bathing, use a fine-tooth comb and run it on the strands of hair while nakababad sa (soaked in) kwell shampoo so that even the eggs will come off. Use kwell shampoo everyday whenever taking a shower until all lice and eggs are removed. This usually will take about a a week or less.

**Note: If one member of the family has this kind of infestation, it is wise to let the others be treated with the same shampoo so as to prevent further spread and/or possible re-contamination.

Tell your cousin to avoid sharing things. Wash all linens (pillow cases, blankets, etc) and hair accessories (suklay, ipit, etc) that were exposed to your cousin's infected head.

To those who might recommend anti-dandruff shampoo, Forget it. It will not work. Why? The mechanism of action of Anti-dandruff shampoo is to eradicate FUNGUS-causing dandruff & NOT eradicating LICE. The difference between the two is that the latter is an arthropod. A Louse is NOT a fungus. Its physiology is different from that of a plant.

There is also a herbal counterpart of kwell BUT i do not know how effective that is.

You can ask any pharmacist in mercury drug store or watsons for the brand i just mentioned.

Adult Immunizations

As kids back then, we often hate getting our shots done. It hurts a lot... even after the deed is done. When we reached adulthood, we sigh with relief. "Alas, I am finally done with all those torture being done to me!"
On the contrary, vaccination can continue up to adulthood. Some of us may think otherwise. It is a good thing that somehow, our Department of Health is promoting awareness on Adult Vaccinations.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of Cure" - that's what vaccines do. It may not 100% prevent a disease BUT it helps BOOST our immune system to fight off that disease.

Listed below are frequently asked questions on adult vaccinations which is also a part of the DOH Immunization Program.

Are there vaccines that protect adults against communicable diseases?

Yes! Immunizations are available that protect adults against:

Diphtheria.

Hepatitis A.

Hepatitis B.

Human papillomavirus (HPV).

Influenza (flu).

Measles.

Mumps.

Pertussis (whooping cough).

Pneumococcal disease.

Rubella (German measles).

Shingles (herpes zoster).

Tetanus (lockjaw).

Varicella (chickenpox).

Consult your health care provider or local health department to find out which immunizations are recommended for you.

Why are immunizations important?

Some of these illnesses do not have a cure, and all may cause serious health problems or even death. Vaccines are among the safest medicines available. They are very effective and can prevent the suffering and costs associated with these preventable diseases.

Which vaccinations do adults need?

Tdap/Td:

All adults need a tetanus and diphtheria (Td) booster shot every 10 years. Additionally, adults aged <65>tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination for one Td booster.

MMR:

Adults born after 1956 who are not immune to measles, mumps, or rubella should be immunized.

HPV:

Women aged 26 years or younger should be immunized against human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus that causes cervical cancer.

Pneumococcal:

All adults aged 65 or older, as well as persons aged 2-64 years who have diabetes or chronic heart, lung, liver, or kidney disorders, need protection against pneumococcal disease.

Influenza (flu):

Flu vaccination is recommended for all adults aged 50 years or older, women who will be pregnant during flu season (October-March), and residents of long-term care facilities. Other adults who should seek a yearly flu vaccine include health care workers and those who live with high-risk persons, including those who live with or who provide care for children <6>

Hepatitis B:
Hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for adults in certain high-risk groups, such as:

Health care workers and public safety workers exposed to blood on the job.

Household and sexual contacts of persons with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

Sexually active people who are not in long-term, mutually monogamous relationships.

People seeking evaluation or treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs).

Men who have sex with men.

Injection drug users.

Travelers to countries where HBV infection is common.

People with end-stage renal disease.

HIV-infected persons.

Hepatitis B vaccine is also recommended for anyone seeking protection from hepatitis B.

To increase vaccination rates among people at highest risk for HBV infection, hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for all adults in the following settings:

STD treatment facilities.

HIV testing and treatment facilities.

Facilities providing drug abuse treatment and prevention services.

Health care settings targeting services to injection drug users or men who have sex with men.

Correctional facilities.

End-stage renal disease programs and facilities for chronic hemodialysis patients.

Institutions and non-residential child care facilities for persons with developmental disabilities.

Hepatitis A:
Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for adults in certain high risk groups, including:

Travelers to countries where hepatitis A is common.

People with chronic liver disease.

People who have clotting-factor disorders, such as hemophilia.

Men who have sex with men.

Users of injection and non-injection illegal drugs.

Varicella (chickenpox):
Varicella vaccine is recommended for all adults, including:

Teachers of young children and child care workers.

Residents and staff in institutional settings.

Military personnel.

Non-pregnant women of childbearing age.

International travelers.

Health care workers.

Family members of immuno-compromised persons who have not had chickenpox and have not been vaccinated against chickenpox.

Meningococcal:
Meningococcal vaccine is recommended for:

Adults who do not have a spleen.

Adults who have terminal complement component deficiencies (immune system disorder).

First year college students living in dormitories.

Military recruits.

Certain laboratory workers.

Persons who travel to or live in countries in which meningococcal disease is common.

Herpes Zoster (shingles):

Adults 60 years of age and older should receive one dose of herpes zoster vaccine whether or not they have had shingles. Persons with chronic medical conditions may be vaccinated unless a contraindication or precaution exists for their condition.

Where can I get my immunizations?

Your doctor, nurse, or clinic may carry immunizations. Additionally, your county health department or local hospital may administer influenza, pneumococcal, hepatitis A, and hepatitis B vaccines. Many pharmacies offer these and other immunizations. Clinics may also be available in shopping malls, grocery stores, senior centers, and other community settings.

What do these vaccines cost?

Out-of-pocket immunization costs may vary depending on your insurance coverage. Check with your doctor or clinic and your health insurance plan to determine your costs. For Medicare beneficiaries, both influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations are paid for by Medicare Part B if your health care provider accepts the Medicare-approved payment. Shingles vaccine is covered under Medicare Part D.

Are there side effects to these immunizations?

Vaccines are among the safest medicines available. Some common side effects are a sore arm or low-grade fever. As with any medicine, there is a very small risk that a serious problems could occur after getting a vaccine. However, the potential risks from the diseases vaccines prevent are much greater than the potential risks associated with the vaccines themselves.

What vaccines do I need if I’m traveling abroad?

Contact your doctor or your county health department as early as possible to find out which immunizations you may need. Vaccines against certain diseases, such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, yellow fever, and typhoid fever are recommended for different countries. The time required to receive all immunizations will depend on whether you need one shot or a series of shots. You can also call the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) information line for international travelers at 1-877-394-8747 or visit CDC's Travelers' Health Website for up-to-date information on immunization recommendations for international travelers.

Should I have a personal immunization record?

Yes! A permanent immunization record should be kept by every adult. It will help you and your doctor ensure that you are fully protected. It can also prevent revaccination during a health emergency or when you change doctors. Ask your doctor for an immunization record, and be sure to take it with you every time you visit your doctor so that it can be reviewed and updated

A Baby's Transition

This is just a guide on how to introduce solid foods to your little angel.

A mother can start introducing solid foods when her baby is already ready to take in solids.

How will I know when my baby is ready?

Your baby will give you clear signs when he's ready to move beyond liquid-only nourishment. Cues to look for include:

Head control. Your baby needs to be able to keep his head in a steady, upright position

Losing the "extrusion reflex." To keep solid food in his mouth and then swallow it, your baby needs to stop using his tongue to push food out of his mouth.

Sitting well when supported. Even if he's not quite ready for a highchair, your baby needs to be able to sit upright to swallow well. For the majority, it is usually around 4-6 months of age when giving semi-solid food is started (if your baby is ready by then).

If your baby is still breast feeding, continue giving that and alternate it with solids. GRADUALLY.

What do I feed my baby?

Breastmilk + Semi-liquid iron-fortified rice cereal

Then you can try other grain cereals

How do I feed my baby?

Begin feeding semi solids by giving your baby a small amount at first, to see how he/she will take it.

Mix about 1 teaspoon cereals with about 5 teaspoon breastmilk or formula (the current one she's used to). This mixture is similar to soup in consistency - that way, your baby will not have difficulty in adjusting to the change.

Try this for a few days until your baby gets used to it.

Once adjusted, you can now adjust the solid-liquid ratio (i.e. from 1 tsp cereal, adjust the amount to 5 teaspoon or more of the cereal with milk until the consistency changes or becomes thicker depending on how your baby can tolerate

If your baby won't eat the mixture stated above, don't give up. Try to give it another try after a few days.

When feeding your baby, talk to him/her in a calm and encouraging manner as you offer each spoonful.

Have a lot of patience. Feed your baby at his/her own pace. Do not rush nor slow the pace. Let your baby adjust.

Let your baby explore the food with his/her touch, sight, smell, and taste. That's the best way to get your baby comfortable with something new.

Just how much will I feed my baby?

gradually introduce semi solid foods once or twice a day - depending on the tolerance of your baby.

Once your baby has adjusted, you can now give semi solids 3 time per day and in between, you can also give him/her breastmilk.

Are there any other alternatives to cereals?

Even though it's a good idea to get your baby accustomed to eating a wide variety of foods, it'll take time for him to get used to each new taste and texture. Each baby will have unique food preferences, but the transition should go something like this:

1. Semi-liquid cereals

2. Strained or mashed fruits and vegetables

3. Finely chopped table foods, including meat and other protein sources

As I have mentioned earlier, introduce semi solids GRADUALLY. That way, if your baby develops an allergic reaction, you will not which ones to avoid in the future.

Speaking of which...

Avoid these foods for your baby:

Honey and corn syrup- These may contain bacterial spores that can cause food-borne illnesses to your baby which can most often be fatal.

Salted and overly sweet foods- A baby's immature kidneys cannot handle too much salt. as for excessive sweets, it may displace the essential nutrients needed by your baby.

Minoxidil for hair Loss

View this site

Examples

         <col> <col>

Generic Name

Brand Name

minoxidil

Rogaine

Minoxidil (2% or 5% solution) is a spray or lotion that you put directly on your scalp twice a day. It is available without a prescription.

How It Works

It is unclear how minoxidil affects hair growth. Minoxidil appears to increase hair follicles and increase the diameter of hair shafts.

Minoxidil has been approved for both men and women.

Why It Is Used

Minoxidil was originally used to treat high blood pressure. It is now also used to treat inherited hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), the most common cause of hair loss, as well as for other causes of hair loss.

How Well It Works

Minoxidil slows hair loss and grows new hair. In men, the 5% solution appears to be more effective than the 2% solution, but it costs more and may have more side effects.1

Some people who take minoxidil only grow hair that is thin and wispy or similar to peach fuzz.

Minoxidil seems to work best on people younger than 30 years of age who have been losing hair for fewer than 5 years.2

Side Effects

The most common side effects include skin irritation and an itchy scalp. In women, minoxidil may promote facial hair growth, especially on the forehead and cheeks.

If you have heart problems, ask your health professional about using this medication.

See Drug Reference for a full list of side effects. (Drug Reference is not available in all systems.)

What To Think About

Minoxidil must be used daily. If you stop using minoxidil, any regrown hair will gradually be lost, and within 6 to 12 months the scalp will most likely appear the same as before treatment.

Women may have more hair growth if they take minoxidil with estrogen (such as hormone replacement or birth control pills).

Complete the new medication information form (PDF)(What is a PDF document?) to help you understand this medication.

Citations

Olsen EA, et al. Your "future family tree" is safe. Your testicles during childhood are still carrying immature sperm cells which is of no use. However, if you got mumps after adolescent age (wherein your sperms are already "ready & mature" enough, there is an increased risk that you may develop Orchitis (it is an inflammation of one or both (minamalas ka nga naman talaga) testicles which houses the sperm cells). If the inflammation is not controlled especially if BOTH testicles are involved, then you may become sterile (hence no "future family tree" to make). If only one testicle got inflamed, lucky for you to still have one testicle left to produce your sperm cells. Statistics showed that it is usual or it is common that only one testicle gets infected by the virus and it seldom is both (buti nalang!!!) LoL.

For us women: the same is true. Yes, our ovaries can get infected and the same holds true that we can get sterile (baog) in the process if the infection isn't controlled fast. However, statistics showed that it is RARE for females that have mumps get infected in the ovaries as well... (phew, buti nalang!!!) LoL.

That's why as kids nowadays get the privilege of having the mumps vaccine. It doesn't necessarily mean that having the vaccine, you will not get infected. No. You may still get mumps BUT at least, the chances of having complications such as orchitis is very less. The purpose of a vaccine is to help boost our immune system. These are not some form of wonder drug. ^_^

Medication for scars?

>Is there a medication that helps remove or lessens scar formation?

Answer:

There is already a drug being marketed here in the Philippines. (Accidentally nabuntis kahit umiinom ng BC pills?) - Is there an incident wherein pill intake fails (i.e. accidental pregnancy despite taking the Pill?)

>Ang dami ko kasing ka-office mate na gumagamit ng ganito. Isn't this a danger to one's health?)

Answer:

All "Pills" (the ones related to our reproductive tract ha) contain either estrogen, progesterone or both. These 3 are hormones which has several roles in our body:

- it regulates our cycle
- helps smoothen our skin (particularly estrogen)
- helps lessen our risk of cardiovascular diseases, etc.

So why take pills if our body is already making these hormones?

- since it regulates our monthly cycle, we can also "manually" control our being fertile or not, hence, these are also used as contraceptives

- Yes, our bodies make these hormones BUT only up to a certain period of time called MENOPAUSE.

What is MENOPAUSE then?

- Menopause is a stage in life (most commonly occurring in women) wherein our body tends to stop manufacturing these hormones and so doctors would usually prescribe HRTs or Hormonal Replacement Therapy to prevent some women having irritating symptoms of menopause (most common are hot flushes and drying of vagina (tuyot or tigang kung sa tagalog, no offense meant).

Who can take Pills**?
- Those who are practicing family planning
- Those who have irregular menses
- Those who have acne
- Those who have hormonal imbalances

**Note: Your doctor is the one who will prescribe you with the right dosage of Pills based on what his clinical findings and/or lab results show.

Now comes the most important question:

Is it SAFE to take PILLS?

- Yes, it is safe AS LONG AS you follow what your doctor has prescribed you to do. Pills cannot be taken for very long periods of time. You have to let your body "rest" once in a while as per order of your physician because research show that long term use of pills can lead to reproductive tract cancers (particularly if you have a strong family history of cancer).

Are there any side effects in taking Pills?

- Yes there are side effects, but case to case basis only. What i mean by this is that, some people noticed getting mild headaches when taking pills. Yet other people noticed getting a full blown migraine which lasts for days. Other people however get nauseated (feeling ng pagsusuka). It depends on how your body responds.

- If you feel any discomfort when you take a certain brand of pills, discontinue it and shift to another brand (BUT with the same dosage and same Generic Name) until maging "Hiyang" ka sa brand na yun.

- However, if you notice you still have symptoms, discontinue your pill intake and consult your physician immediately.
<img width='1' height='1' foul-smelling vagina can only mean one thing: INFECTION

Usually, it is a combination of a foul smell + unusual vaginal secretions.

Normally, the color of a vaginal discharge is whitish to light yellowish with no malodorous smell and no itchiness around the v-area.

An unusual vaginal discharge is sometimes:
- grayish
- yellowish and cheesy in consistency (like pigsa) or
- greenish (like uhog)

An infection can be a simple UTI or a more complicated one like daddies. Ano po gamot sa dry skin ng baby? Ang dry kasi ng skin ng niece ko ngayon. Many thanks!

Answer:

Although the above mentioned are oils, just make sure to do a skin test on your baby lalo na kung hindi pa siya napapahiran pa before ng oils/lotion.

To do the skin test, place a small drop of the oil onto one of your baby's arm (dun opposite ng siko nyo po ipahid). Wait for 24hours. Thereafter, check that area if there is any redness or swelling (parang kagat ng lamok). If there is, do not use that oil. Use another type or brand instead.

Aside from Virgin Coconut oil or mineral oil, you can also use the Brand "Cetaphil" which is hypoallergenic even to sensitive skin. You can also use Johnson&Johnson's baby products.

Again, always do a skin test before using it on your baby.

******
gildaaltez says:

Johnson's baby lotion (pink) is a water-based lotion so I myself suggest it. Napagaralan ko din minsan sa isang training namin on skin care na always be aware of what kind of skin products are we going to apply in our skin and complexion. Dapat laging water-based. Avoid products that have Mineral-oil content. Result? What do you think? Just my piece of cake,,,,,,

Vitamins for your child?

anu anu nga ba ang marerecomend nyu na vitamins for our child, to keep them active and safe from any sickness to remain them healthy.

Under normal dosages, vitamins are safe. Overdosing can also be dangerous to a child's body as their metabolism is not yet that fully developed like us adults. So precaution is still adviced especially when self-medicating your kids. To check for the appropriate dosages, a small paper insert is included in every box of medicines including vitamins.

LASIK Eye Surgery - is this a dangerous procedure?

Hi, is there anyone nag-try na magpa laser eye surgery? Di ba masakit? (Is it painful?) di ba delikado? (Isn't it dangerous?) I am tired of using contact lenses and eyeglasses. Young age group (20+ to 40+)
2.High error of refraction (usually -300 or +300, i think) or legally blind (you cannot focus/cannot see anything with/in reading range)

The procedure itself lasts for about 30minutes to 45mins. Pain= none, you will be given pain relievers if you are very sensitive.

Delikado = No. As long as you follow through what your ophthalmologist prescribes you to take then do so.

After 1 day rest, you can do your daily chores already as long as you have adjusted to your new set of "calibrated" eyes.

*****
richinep says:

Let's see...

1. AGE:There is no REAL age requirement. we've already started doing it on kids whose vision is being threatened by high prescriptions. What is important is refraction stability. when it's stable (for 6 months to 1 year), then we can do it regardless of age.

2. HIGH ERROR: This may be true about 2 decades or so ago. with the leaps in technology in the last decade, we can do laser on eyes with as low as 0.75D (or 75). Note that the laws of deminishing returns comes into play here (i.e. it may no longer be cost effective at this low an error of refraction).

3. Duration of procedure:usually less than 15 minutes for both eyes

The rest are still quite true

OPTION 1 (HIGH QUALITY )
2008 Price at St.Luke's ranges from P61,900- P75,964 (both eyes) depends on what needs to be done on your eyes. The process or mechanism is similar to exfoliation of dead skin cells (superficial cells) so that the underlying smooth skin will appear.

Advantage: you will have a smoother looking skin with that "youthful healthy glow"

Disadvantage: at least 5 or more sessions depending on the severity of blemishes.
: you will have to shell out Php6,000 or more (per session costs around Php2K-3K depending on the
clinic/company).
: once you have started on peeling, you will have to have maintainance schedule, otherwise new
cells thats underneath might not surface evenly.

My dermatologist doesn't advocate this procedure if you don't have any blemishes at all.

Diamond peel and Microdermabrasion are the ones used nowadays. Either of the two will do. From your reply, estimated number of session can be 8 or more (by that time, you will have smooth flawless skin).

It is best to go directly to a dermatologist just to be safe. I went to "Lets Face It" a few years back to get my pimples treated. To make the story short, lalong lumala - it got worse. (Note: I do not intend na manira ako ng company but I didn't know back then that the chemicals they used on my skin were not compatible with my skin type).

When I sought consult with a dermatologist, my pimples were gone and i got my normal skin back. She only recommended diamond peel if topical creams won't work.

I suggest you go to Jose Reyes Hospital (Tayuman), that's where the best dermatologists came from.

********
Note: For those of you who have already undergone this procedure, feel free to drop any comments on this so that others may have an idea of what it's like. A person is having bouts of diarrhea because there are toxins in the body that needs to be eliminated. So go to the toilet and sit on the throne.

Medications like loperamide (Immodium) and the like are anti-spasmodics. These drugs tend to stop your tummy and intestines from making persistalsis (hilab). The only mechanism for your body to remove the toxins is by bowel movement (pagtae). If you take in these medications, you therefore stop pagtatae and you also prolong the time waste material stays in your body. Mas matagal pa ang pagstop ng pagtatae. Hindi kase completely na-flush out ung dumi e.

The above medications can be used if a person has important matters to attend to (i.e. business meetings, nasa daan, no accessible toilet, etc). If, however, a person can have easy access to a toilet, then by all means, go. Don't let waste/toxins stay too long in your system as this can delay your recovery.

The best medication that the Department of Health advocates is Rehydration. During diarrheal attacks, our body looses fluids (and I mean, lots of it) including electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, etc) whicht our body needs in order to function properly.

So in case you or your loved ones have acute episodes of diarrhea, just simply drink an Oral Rehydrating Solution (ORS) like Pedialyte, glucolyte, gatorade, etc. For every bout of LBM, drink a glass of ORS. Replace the amount of fluid that you lost as soon as possible.

If, for instance, you can't afford ORS, you can simply make one at home:

a. clean/boiled drinking water
b. a pinch of salt
c. 2 table spoons of sugar

put all the above ingredients in a glass and drink. It may taste crappy but it sure helps.

Eat banana too as this fruit is high in potassium.

However, take note for any improvements. If you find none, then it is wise to seek medical treatment as this may be already an underlying infection (Typhoid, amoebiasis, etc).

The Emergency Pill

In case any of you forgot to count your fertile days, allow me to post what we usually call "Emergency Pill" or "Morning after Pill". Expect
to have some PMS symptoms and menstrual bleeding.

I hope this helps.

How to lower blood cholesterol

Answer:

rexdeveraturda says:
Cholesterol per se is not really the problem, but the bad cholesterol aspect of it which clogs our arteries and eventually leads to many heart-congestion condition.

Our brain needs lots of good choleterol in order to function well. But once the bad cholesterol overwhelms our arteries and veins, that's where heart-disease related problems start.

Eat lots of raw or half-cooked green leafy veggies for good health. Avoid fried meats. The latter will certainly deliver you to a hell of many heart and blood circulation problems.

*******

I agree with rexdeveraturda. The best way to control bad cholesterol is by living a healthy lifestyle. When i say healthy lifestyle, this includes a healthy, balanced diet (go, grow, glow foods) and active lifestyle (good exercise... yoga etc. and NOT stress).

make sure to have a yearly check up of your blood chemistry which includes Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, etc. so that you can monitor the amount of good and bad cholesterol.

If, however, lab exams reveal abnormal results. Consult your health care physician to give you lipid-lowering medication(s) which will suit you (yung hiyang sa 'yo at sa bulsa mo) as these drugs are somewhat expensive.

As for herbal supplements, one can try garlic capsules. These are much better than eating the raw ones.

Insomnia - A night's bestfriend

>How can one overcome insomnia?

Answer:

Diet: Eat foods rich in Serotonin (milk, cheese, fruits...)

Lifestyle: stress can cause sleepless nights. Try to eliminate your stressors. If you are a morning person and have difficulty sleeping at night - train your internal biological clock to sleep at the same time everyday and wake up at the same time everyday. Do it gradually so that your body can adapt to the changes. Oh, and ditch the TV (late night shows).

Sleep: Obtain a restful sleep - it doesnt matter how many hours a day of sleep you do, whats important is that when you wake up the next day, you feel well rested or refreshed.
When it comes to sleeping time, make sure you condition your body to sleep at the exact time every night (i.e. if you go to bed at around 10:00pm, make sure you go to bed on that same time on the succeeding days to allow your body to adjust or cope with the time).

I know its hard to do all this but it takes time and discipline for one to achieve it.

For additional info, i have found this related link. A study published in the December 2007 British Medical Journal tweaked physicians on their acceptance of some widespread medical beliefs that might now be reclassified as old wives' tales. Here's a rundown:

Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day: The researchers who conducted the study could find no clinical evidence to support this notion. But they did dig up an article from the November 2002 American Journal of Physiology that documented the lack of evidence behind this popular recommendation. You do need to be well hydrated, but research suggests that the liquids most people drink daily - juice, milk, and decaffeinated beverages - will do the trick. Your best bets are purified water, diluted fruit juice, tea, and sparkling water flavored with fruit juice.

We use only 10 percent of our brains: This is a real oldie that traces its history back to 1907, but didn't originate, as once believed, with Albert Einstein. Now that we know much more about neuroscience than we did 100 years ago, we can say for sure that we use much more than 10 percent of the brain, say the BMJ researchers. In fact, high-tech methods of studying the brain have not identified any inactive areas.

Hair and fingernails continue to grow after death: This disturbing, gruesome image is pure "moonshine" according to forensic anthropologist William Maples, who was quoted in the BMJ study. However, he explained that dehydration of the body after death can cause retraction of the skin around hair and nails, giving the illusion that they have grown. All tissues require energy to sustain their functions, and no such thing is possible once the mechanism that promotes normal growth shuts down at death.

Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight: You can get eyestrain and have difficulty focusing when trying to read in poor lighting, but these symptoms have no permanent effect on eyesight. One current theory holds that nearsightedness (myopia) might be caused by reading in dim light or holding books too close to the face. But consider this: rates of myopia are increasing and are higher now then they were centuries ago when people read by candlelight. What's more, the BMJ researchers found hundreds of expert opinions that conclude that reading in dim light doesn't permanently hurt your eyes.

Shaving causes hair to grow back faster or coarser: No, it does not. This popular notion was disproved as early as 1928 and more recent studies have confirmed that shaving has no effect on hair growth (or regrowth), write the BMJ investigators. They speculate that when shaved hair regrows, it lacks the fine taper seen at the end of unshaven hair, making it appear coarser. And the fact that it hasn't been exposed to light may make it seem darker than other hair.

Mobile phones are dangerous in hospitals: The BMJ credits this widespread belief (and the origin of those signs in hospitals warning against the use of mobile phones) to a Wall Street Journal article citing a medical journal report of more than 100 incidents of suspected electromagnetic interference with medical devices before 1993. But studies in England and the U.S. have found little in the way of interference and few serious effects. The BMJ cited a 2007 study that showed no interference at all in 300 tests in 75 treatment rooms. Indeed, the journal reported on a survey of anesthetists that showed use of mobile phones by physicians was associated with a reduced risk of medical error or injury resulting from delays in communication. Let's see how long it takes hospitals to react to these findings and change their policies with regard to cell phone use.

Eating turkey makes people especially drowsy: Not so. Here, the myth is that the tryptophan in turkey causes the drowsiness. This amino acid is known to cause drowsiness, but the truth is that there's as much tryptophan in pork and cheese as there is in turkey. What's more, as the BMJ researchers noted that for tryptophan to promote sleep, you need to ingest it on an empty stomach (with no protein present) - something that's unlikely at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Other factors are probably to blame for post-meal drowsiness: any big meal can make you sleepy because of a decrease in blood flow and oxygenation to the brain. And then, of course, there's the wine.

The researchers said that they selected the seven myths above because they had heard them so often that they thought they were true or might be true. They learned that they could be wrong and "need to question what other falsehoods we unwittingly propagate" in the practice of medicine.

Amen.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all of you! I pray that this year will be fruitful and meaningful for everyone.
No, I am NOT, I repeat, DEFINITELY NOT going to make a New Year’s Resolution for this year. Because like all my previous resolutions… I broke all of it. Broke all of it after a mere 2 days post new year’s eve. Yes it was that quick. Shame on me. LoL. So, instead of making a New Year’s Resolution, I said to myself that I will just do something which I can achieve more easily. I still remember quite vividly that I broke one of my resolutions: I will not binge on chocolate bars (Yes, I must admit that I am a sucker for chocolates of any kind). Hahah. Well, I just hope for this year, I will be able to cut down on it. Hopefully. Cross your fingers! =P
For this year’s first blog, let me share with you an email sent to me. This is nothing serious (I do not want to start the year with seriousness mind you, I just want to start it with something light.) We become what we think about. Loving thoughts create loving experiences and loving relationships. Affirmations can change our beliefs and thoughts about others and ourselves. If we want to love someone, we need to consider their needs and desires. Thinking about your ideal partner will help you recognize her when you meet her.

The Second Secret - The Power Of Respect

You cannot love anyone or anything unless you first respect them. The first person you need to respect is yourself. To begin to gain self-respect asks yourself, "What do I respect about myself?" To gain respect for others, even those you may dislike, ask yourself "What do I respect about them?"

The Third Secret - The Power Of Giving

If you want to receive love, all you have to do is give it! The more love you give, the more you will receive. To love is to give of yourself freely and unconditionally. Practice random acts of kindness. Before committing to a relationship ask not what the other person will be able to give to you, but rather what will you be able to give them. The secret formula of a happy, lifelong, loving relationship is to always focus on what you can give instead of what you can take.

The Fourth Secret - The Power Of Friendship

To find a true love, you must first find a true friend. Love does not consist of gazing into each other's eyes, but rather looking outward together in the same direction. To love someone completely you must love them for who they are, not what they look like. Friendship is the soil through which love's seeds grow. If you want to bring love into a relationship, you must first bring friendship.

The Fifth Secret - The Power Of Touch

Touch is one of the most powerful expressions of love, breaking down barriers and bonding relationships. Touch changes our physical and emotional states and makes us more receptive to love.

The Sixth Secret - The Power Of Letting Go

If you love something, let it free. If it comes back to you it's yours, if it doesn't, it never was. Even in a loving relationship, people need their own space. If we want to learn to love, we must first learn to forgive and let go of past hurts and grievances. Love means letting go of our fears, prejudices, egos and conditions. "Today I let go of all my fears, the past has no power over me - today is the beginning of a new life."

The Seventh Secret - The Power Of Communication

When we learn to communicate openly and honestly, life changes. To love someone is to communicate with them. Let the people you love know that you love them and appreciate them. Never be afraid to say those three magic words: "I Love you." Never let an opportunity pass to praise someone. Always leave someone you love with a loving word - it could be the last time you see them. If you were about to die but could make telephone calls to the people you loved, who would you call, what would you say and.. Why are you waiting?

The Eighth Secret - The Power Of Commitment

If you want to have love in abundance, you must be committed to it, and that commitment will be reflected in your thoughts and actions. Commitment is the true test of love. If you want to have loving relationships, you must be committed to loving relationships. When you are committed to someone or something, quitting is never an option. Commitment distinguishes a fragile relationship from a strong one.

The Ninth Secret - The Power Of Passion

Passion ignites love and keeps it alive. Lasting passion does not come through physical attraction alone; it comes from deep commitment, enthusiasm, interest and excitement. Passion can be recreated by recreating past experiences when you felt passionate. Spontaneity and surprises produce passion. The essence of love and happiness are the same; all we need to do is to live each day with passion.

The Tenth Secret - The Power Of Trust

Trust is essential in all loving relationships. Without it one person becomes suspicious, anxious and fearful and the other person feels wrapped and emotionally suffocated. You cannot love someone completely unless you trust them completely. Act as if your relationship with the person you love will never end. One of the ways you can tell whether a person is right for you is to ask yourself, "Do I trust them completely and unreservedly? " If the answer is "no", think carefully before making a commitment.

Just Imagine
